FlashBack66: INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE (1989)

America, as it was meant to be
Indiana Jones is easily the last cowboy of modern American filmmaking. The archetype will endure and I'm sure you can rattle of names off movies since this one to counter my assertion, but the horse and whip aside, this really is the last time we get a character who is an undisputed, real American hero.

Hello to all of the fine listeners, viewers, and readers of Preorder66!This is Dkun AKA @dreyga_kun from CollectionDX here to bring you a special review for the Preorder66 site. Now I wanted to review something that would be both a little bit different, but also relevant to the interests of the general audience of the podcast, so I figured this would be a good time to do a tangent of my own and tell you a little bit about my latest experience with Bandai's Master Grade model kit line.

PREORDER66.COM is going to NYCC 2014!

Crasis did not harm this toy.
For the fourth year in a row, Preorder66 will be attending NYCC 2014, scheduled to take place Oct. 9-12, 2014. Last year, we snagged some great exclusive news from Tamashii Nations/Bluefin and we're looking forward to meeting up with them again, along with many other companies both within and beyond the toy community.

Also, #WatchArrow because we're going to be all over Stephen Amell this year. What? No, ma'am.

"Achk Med-Beq" by Hasbro: Video Toy Review

What words can do this toy justice? My words, bitches.

"Commander Spock" by Playmates: Video Toy Review

This is my first video toy review. If you like Star Trek, you should watch it. If you don't like Star Trek, you should watch it too, but you'll probably feel less awesome after watching it. I don't speak Klingon in the video. That language is beneath me. I believe in the freedoms granted under the flag of the Federation. Where was I? Ah, yes, the video:

THE COSPLAY OF SDCC 2014

Every year at every convention I go to I try to make a conscious effort to document some of the great cosplay that I see. It's difficult to capture them all, and being the person I am I tend not to bother people for pictures the best that I can. With some 130,000+ attendees each day at San Diego Comic-Con it is near impossible to capture them all, but surprisingly I was able to get pictures of more amazing costumes than I have in previous years at SDCC.

This is only a very small sampling of some of the amazing stuff I saw in San Diego this year. Sometimes you just get caught in a wave of people and don't have the ability to swim upstream and be able to get your equipment ready in time to get that shot. One that I really regret missing was a Hugh Heffner Captain Kirk mashup with a gaggle of Star Fleet bunnies surrounding him, but by the time I made it over to take their picture Kirk was ushering them on hastily.

SIDESHOW COLLECTIBLES (AND HOT TOYS) ON DISPLAY AT SDCC 2014

The Sideshow Collectibles booth was one popular place to be during San Diego Comic-Con this year (well honestly it is a popular place to be every SDCC) and there were many great and impressive things on display. SDCC is one of few places where you can really see some of these impressive tributes to our favorite corners of pop culture in person. You know here at Preorder66 we are no strangers to the high end world of Sideshow Collectibles and Hot Toys, but these items are just out of reach for many and this is the first time some fans get the chance to see the stuff with their own eyes.

7.29.2014

FlashBack66: STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER (1989)

This fucking movie.
This movie was EPISODE I before there was such a thing.

STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER is a bad movie. It has terrible comedy, the absolute worst special effects of any Star Trek film and it's just a mess of a story. And despite all of that, I still love STAR TREK V.

PREORDER66 AT SDCC 2014

I was lucky (or brave) enough to be the lone Preorder66 member to venture out West to the spectacle that is known as SDCC (short for San Diego Comic Con) this year, and I am barely recovering from the ordeal. This would be my third visit to what some consider "Geek Mecca" and it just continues to escalate to a level of insanity that I cannot even articulate. San Diego is gorgeous as it always is, but come time for SDCC it takes on a whole different persona that is just so difficult to put into words. Even as I watch events unfold throughout the week sometimes the best I can mutter as I shake my head in disbelief is "fucking Comic-Con".

THE NINTENDO GAME BOY: REMINISCING ON WHAT I DIDN'T HAVE

THE GAME BOY TURNS 25 AND I ARRIVED LATE TO THE PARTY

The Nintendo Game Boy turned 25 recently, and you've probably read a post or two about that fact by now. You might have seen tweets or Facebook posts showing off pictures of a Game Boy system along with an anecdote of a fond memory. Maybe even some posts about the top 17 games for the system, or more on the system’s history. This post will be just a little bit different, and here's why: I didn't own an original Game Boy until just a few years ago.

Let me set the stage for you. The year is 1989, and a nine year old Fuzzless wonder is deep into Nintendo...

TANGENT66 - CRASIS FLASHBACK A2A

In celebration of our site's birthday, I offer this little gem I uncovered tonight. I mentioned this way back on the podcast at some point. I can't remember when. I'm getting old.

FLASHBACK: I was art directing a photo shoot for a wholesome family snack company when I realized who the actor we had cast as "Grandpa" really was.

Yes, folks, I wasn't kidding.

ASS-TO-ASS.

TOYING AROUND WITH CRASIS - IN PONDVISION™

NECA GODZILLA (2014) 12" HEAD TO TAIL FIGURE

DUNNNNNNNNN. DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN...
Every once in a blue moon, I get this strong urge to grab my smart phone and snap pics of my toys out in the wild. No fancy camera, no crazy setup - just nature and plastic. I generally throw these sorts of things on twitter, where they are quickly lost in the current of cat pics, lunch snaps, dick jokes, retweets of obscure Japanese stuff and the latest robot drama.

As PREORDER66.COM (the website celebrating one year of life today, BTW!) is an extension of the cast and our love of pop-culture, toys, etc., I figured it was time to add a new segment to the site - TOYING AROUND. This week, I took some snaps of a NECA figure.

I know, not even remotely "high-end." Indulge me, folks.

Ichabod's Thoughts on Godzilla 2014 (Spoiler free)

Godzilla 2014 mini talk

So, for the first time in 14 years I entered a theater to see a new Godzilla movie. And was it ever a Godzilla movie. Back in 1998 at the tender age of 13 I saw the TriStar pictures Godzilla. It was a giant monster movie, but it didn't have that feel. Even then I saw it more as a monster than Godzilla. The big G and I go way back, to the late 80's when my mom would rent me VHS tapes from the video store next to the liquor store, come home and sit me down in front of whatever I picked out. One time I grabbed 1974's Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla and that was a life changing experience. Ever since then I loved everything Godzilla. From the big vinyl Imperial Godzilla figures to the movies to the weird white castle toys.

Tangent66: S7AR WARS

When I was ten years old, my brother would make my mom take us to a local baseball card/comic shop called The Dragon's Den. He was there solely to accrue his holdings in cardboard totems to athletic greats, but I was a willing participant in these trips because I was able to explore the rest of the store- and its the comic collection. Those were truly blissful days. On the wall of The Dragon's Den, seemingly 100 ft. away from my hands hung a poster encased in a gorgeous frame. Every time we went to the shop, I would ask the clerk "How much for the poster?" "Same as last time, $150." Damn, I'll never have enough money to buy that thing. I would make sure my mom overheard the exchange, hoping she would eventually have an epiphany that yes, she should buy this thing for me, and end my Sisyphean struggle. That day never happened, but the point was never to own the poster but that something so simple could represent so much value to me. Tom Jung painted something that would be ingrained in the minds of millions around the world. The poster was a symbol, the real prize was the film itself.

MACROSS STORY TIME - JETLIAR

I woke up yesterday to the news that MACROSS, my favorite animated franchise, is launching a new television series. No details have been revealed at this point, but just knowing new material is in the works ignited a fire in me that I haven't felt in a long time. Or perhaps that triple espresso this morning was a bad idea. Regardless, I'm pumped and wanting to channel that energy into the very first Macross Story Time article on this site. Get comfortable, my friends, because we're going way back. Back to when this whole thing started. Back to when I was lied to as a child.

Tangent66: James Gordon's Mustache

The internet tells me that James Gordon, Commissioner of Police, Gotham City first appeared in Detective Comics #27 (1939). Here's what Gordon looked like back when gas cost a goddamn penny for a hundred gallons:

Hitler feared this man.
Now, Western culture has taken many hits over the ensuing decades. All sorts of trends have further diminished the greatness of the white male, mostly due to white males fucking everything up. But one thing was always there to guide us through these uncertain times, a simple but stalwart sentinel of strength- Jim Gordon's mustache. Well, not any more.

3.12.2014

Tangent66: My Tribute to James T. Kirk

James T. Kirk.

James! "Motherfucking" T! Kirk!

Take a moment and consider the words I have just written. This man is a goddamn celebration of human potential. Kirk is an all-out menace of excellence. Stop reading this article for a second and open up another tab in your web browser and, no fuck that, I will embed this highlight reel and you can see for yourself the magic, please continue after this break:

Flashback66: G.I. JOE turned me into a stone cold lunch killer

The year was 1985 and I was in my toy-obsessed prime.

"Imagine our white babies, Fraulein!"
I was mostly a science fiction kid due to STAR WARS and my burgeoning interest in STAR TREK, but alongside this began my (unhealthy) obsession with counter-terrorism through the military-industrial behemoth known as task force "G.I. Joe" as depicted in the comic book and contemporary television program, each named "G.I. JOE." What did "G.I." stand for? Who was "Joe?" What is a "weather dominator" and why should we fear it? My mind was filled with wonder at this new world of laser-powered weaponry and 0 death count. I thought the top "Joe" Conrad "Duke" Hauser (RA 213-75-7793) was a competent fellow, perhaps alarmingly Aryan for my 8-year old taste, but nonetheless a pleasant alternative to the likes of "Flint" or the foolish drunkard "Ship-wreck." And I also found his romantic tension with Master Sergeant Shana "Scarlett" O'Hara a refreshing break from the sexless robot adventures of a certain program which shall not be named.  Oh, the drama of protecting the free world!
