Empir3 Talks : Hell & Light up Features

Recently Sideshow Collectibles updated their site with new pictures of the Prime Evil from Diablo 3.  These new pictures revealed that the statue will now have a light up feature.

Prior to these updates we were told the statue would look like this :

Now I am a fan of light up features for the most part and when this piece is lit up I think it looks MUCH better. When it is not lit up, however, it does seem to lack- it seems they have altered how they were doing the paint. I am sure they changed it to make the lights blend in a bit better when lit. Overall the paint job is much brighter and it may just be this one shot was lit too brightly but it is too contrasty for me. I prefer the more maroon tones of the original paint scheme to the brighter reds and the darker parts seemingly less painted.

Now of course your reply can be "Well who cares how it looks when it's not lit? They added the light up feature because that is the way it is meant to be displayed." I can not really argue that, but how often would you really leave it lit up for? Personally I use the light up features rarely, only when I am taking a picture or admiring the piece from time to time. I tend to be paranoid and do not want to burn out the lights.

So what I want to know is do you prefer this piece with the light up feature or the version that was originally solicited? Do you like light up features in general?  If you do , do you leave them on for prolonged periods of time? Let me hear your guys thoughts!

  1. I like light up features, but I agree with you, I'd be paranoid leaving the thing on for long periods of time. For a statue like this, I would turn it on every so often, but say for a Hot Toys or the Metal Gear Rex, I'd probably leave them off for most of the time.

  2. Personally I don't care about light up features or sound features. I think its just a way to drive prices up on items that otherwise shouldn't cost so much. Does it look nice? yeah Im sure it looks awesome lit up, but as you stated, Im a bit paranoid as well and wouldn't want to burn out the LEDs. I cant remember the last statue I had with a light up feature that I actually turned on to admire.

    1. Well I will say it was originally solicited with no light up feature and they added it without raising the cost. Granted it is already a fairly pricey piece but it is also a decent size.

    2. Ok, I didn't realize the price didn't go up. Well I guess that's a plus. I mean adding lights isn't a negative, I just don't personally like light up stuff only for the fact that I hardly ever turn them on and in most cases usually just take the batteries out right away.

  3. Do you think that a model or toy that allowed u to plug it in and leave the lights on semi-permanently would work? I've wondered about it before. I assume that leaving them on that long may heat the toy to much or cause some other kind of issue?

    1. well most of these bigger SSC statues do come with a plug for the wall so in theory you could do that. I am not sure what heating it for long periods of time would do. They are LEDs which do not heat up as much as normal lights i believe right?

    2. I do remember seeing the prototype of this at SDCC in 2010 and its definitely a pretty large statue. So I think it would take a lot of heat to cause any damage and as stated with them being LEDs I don't think they could cause any issues.
